The sound was sharp enough to make Denise flinch.
I stumbled into the cabinet and dropped out of frame.
Vanessa grabbed the glass bowl from the counter and threw it into the sink.
It shattered.
She cursed, reached down, and cut her palm on a broken piece.
Then she looked toward where I was lying.
For nearly ten seconds, she did nothing.
Finally, she grabbed a towel, wrapped her hand, and said,

The officer asked Dad to send him the video.
He did.
Vanessa started crying again.
This time, nobody comforted her.
“I was scared,” she said. “He was going to destroy our family.”
I stared at her.
“So you decided to destroy me first?”
She covered her mouth.
Dad dropped heavily into a plastic chair.
He suddenly looked older.
“Ethan,” he said, “I didn’t know she hit you.”
I believed him.
That was almost worse.
Because he had never asked.
He walked into the kitchen, saw the version of events he preferred, and decided his fourteen-year-old son was disposable.
“You didn’t want to know,” I said.
