He was smiling.
Mom wasn’t.
She was staring at him.
Not angrily.
Not suspiciously.
Emotionally.
Like something about seeing him standing there had pulled her backward in time.
“Mrs. Harper?” Ethan asked.
Mom blinked.
“Sorry. Hi, Ethan.”
“Are you okay?”
“Yes.”
She clearly wasn’t.
Her eyes dropped to the corsage.
Then to his bow tie.
Then back to his face.
I came down another step.
“Mom?”
She turned toward me.
Her expression changed.
“Maddie, come upstairs.”
“What?”
“Just for a minute.”
“Right now?”
“Yes.”
I glanced at Ethan.
He lifted the corsage.
“I have flowers.”
“I can see that.”
“They’re special.”
