Daniel closed his eyes.
I hit him with the papers.
Not hard.
But I hit him.
“You let her stand in front of everyone and promise you her life while you had a contract with my father?”
“Lauren.”
“I trusted you.”
“I know.”
“She trusted you.”
“I know.”
“I spent years feeling guilty because part of me wondered whether you married her for the wrong reason.”
He stared at me.
“And now you think you were right.”
“Wasn’t I?”
“No.”
“Your signature is right there!”
“I never took their money.”
I froze.
Daniel pulled out his phone.
He opened his banking app, then handed it to me.
The account name read:
GRACE BENNETT MERCER INDEPENDENCE TRUST.
The balance was more than $340,000.
I looked at him.
“What is this?”
“Every payment your parents ever sent.”
“You said you didn’t take the money.”
“I didn’t keep it. Every check went here.”
