Daniel jumped up.
I stood beside him.
The doctor stopped.
“She’s out of surgery.”
Neither of us moved.
“And?”
“She’s stable.”
Daniel made a sound somewhere between a laugh and a sob.
I grabbed him.
He collapsed against me.
The doctor continued.
“We’re moving her to intensive care. The next twelve hours still matter, but the bleeding is controlled.”
“What about the babies?”
“Doing very well considering how early they arrived.”
Daniel covered his mouth.
“She made it.”
I nodded, crying.
“She made it.”
Then the elevator doors opened.
My parents walked out.
My mother spotted us first.
“Oh, thank God.”
She rushed forward.
“What happened? Is Grace all right?”
I stepped between her and Daniel.
“She survived.”
Mom pressed both hands to her chest.
