“Now I know I was asking the wrong question.”
Daniel waited.
I looked at my sister.
At her husband.
At their children.
At the chaotic, imperfect, fiercely chosen life surrounding them.
“The real question was never why you chose Grace.”
Daniel smiled.
“No?”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“It was why anyone ever thought Grace shouldn’t get to choose for herself.”
Across the yard, Grace shouted:
“Lauren! Stop being dramatic and bring me some cake!”
Daniel laughed.
I rolled my eyes.
Then I carried my sister a plate.
Because Grace had survived.
Her babies had survived.
Her marriage had survived a secret that could have destroyed it.
And for the first time in her life, nobody in our family was deciding what her future should look like.
