A frightened young woman spoke first.
“You cannot take my daughter.”
Then Mom.
My mother’s voice.
Young.
But unmistakable.
She told Nora she was only signing temporary guardianship documents.
Nora accused Richard of stealing the land.
Eleanor threatened her with the theft case.
Then came the sentence that froze me.
Nora said:
“You wouldn’t be doing this if my baby could see.”
Mom denied it.
Nora replied:
“You think nobody will believe a blind child was worth stealing for.”
Then Dad entered.
Nora cried.
“Richard, please.”
“You signed the papers.”
“I trusted you.”
“You made your choice.”
Then Nora screamed:
“I WAS CARRYING YOUR CHILD!”
The tape ended.
Mara whispered:
“Richard is my biological father.”
I felt sick.
Then another thought struck me.
“Owen married his sister.”
“No.”
Mara shook her head.
“Owen was not Richard’s biological child.”
