“I understand a baby was taken from her mother.”
My breath caught.
Dad stepped closer.
“You think destroying this family helps Mara?”
“The truth belongs to her.”
“The truth will ruin her life.”
Owen’s answer was quiet.
“No.”
Then:
“What you did ruined her life. The truth will only ruin yours.”
A branch cracked beneath my foot.
They saw me.
“What baby?” I demanded.
Dad said it was an old work dispute.
Owen told me:
“Forget it.”
And I did.
That mistake haunted me.
I chose family peace because it was comfortable.
Owen chose truth because it wasn’t.
BACK AT WILLOWCREST MEDICAL CENTER
The elevator doors opened.
Mom came rushing out.
Dad followed.
The second Eleanor saw Mara—
she froze.
Not when she saw me.
Not when she saw the surgeon.
Mara.
For one second, Mom’s grief disappeared.
What replaced it was terror.
Mara tightened her fingers around my wrist.
Then whispered:
“Your parents didn’t rush here because their son died.”
I stared at her.
“They came to make sure Owen took their secret with him.”
THE KEY
Before our parents could reach us, Mara pressed a small brass key into my palm.
Owen’s desk key.
“Bottom drawer.”
“What’s there?”
“A black envelope.”
“With what?”
“Your name.”
“What’s inside?”
“Proof.”
Then my parents reached us.
Grief swallowed the room for several minutes.
