The following morning, I called Ethan.
“I have some family history I need to tell you and Nora.”
His voice immediately became concerned.
“Is everything okay?”
“Yes.”
I smiled.
“It is complicated. But yes.”
He said they would come for dinner on Sunday.
“I’ll make Grandma’s lemon pie,” I told him.
After ending the call, I looked toward the ceiling.
It felt ridiculous, but I spoke anyway.
“It’s coming back into the family, Mom.”
I smiled.
“Through Ethan’s girl.”
I thought about Nora.
Her kindness.
The way she had handed me the necklace without hesitation.
“She’s a good one.”
For a moment, the Bellmere house seemed warmer.
My mother wanted the necklace placed underground so her children would never fight over it.
Dan secretly removed it.
Sold it to a stranger.
That stranger gave it to his daughter.
And twenty-five years later, that daughter fell in love with my son.
The necklace had somehow found its way back into our family without any of us planning it.
My mother wanted us to choose family over the necklace.
In the end, we did.
