2. Acid reflux (silent reflux can mimic mucus)
Many people are surprised to learn that acid reflux can cause a runny throat, even without heartburn. This phenomenon is called laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) or “silent reflux,” and occurs when stomach acid reaches the throat and irritates it.
Signs that reflux may be the cause:
-
Thick mucus or clearing of the throat after eating
-
Hoarseness or voice changes
-
A bitter taste in the mouth
-
Feeling of a lump in the throat
What can help: Avoid late-night meals, reduce spicy and fatty foods, limit caffeine, and keep your head elevated while sleeping.
