Her expression changed.
“Thank you.”
Ethan frowned.
“For dancing?”
“No.”
Mom swallowed.
“For staying with Maddie when she needed someone.”
For once, Ethan didn’t have a joke ready.
He looked at Mom.
Then at me.
Then back at her.
“I didn’t stay by myself.”
Mom’s eyebrows pulled together.
“What?”
“Maddie stays too.”
Four words.
That was all.
Mom closed her eyes.
And I realized those were the words she had needed to hear for six years.
