The chicken was dry.
The DJ played too many slow songs.
The decorations looked, according to him, “like somebody attacked the gym with glitter.”
Then the first slow song started.
He stood.
Held out his hand.
And smiled.
“You owe me.”
I pretended not to understand.
“For what?”
“Twelve years.”
“Oh.”
I looked at his hand.
“The contract.”
“The promise.”
“You really never forgot.”
“No.”
I took his hand.
Five seconds onto the dance floor, he stepped directly on my shoe.
“Ow!”
“That wasn’t me.”
“It was absolutely you.”
“The floor moved.”
“The floor did not move.”
“Your dress is too large.”
“My dress is fine.”
