“She’s alive?”
“She is alive.”
Relief finally broke through his panic, and he leaned forward as the breath left his lungs. Yet even that relief carried another painful realization: his three daughters were alive, but he had missed their birth, their first medical crisis, and even the moment they received their names.
“Where are they now?”
Dr. Patel explained that Grace and Lily had been transferred the previous day to a private neonatal recovery facility arranged through my family physician. Hope remained under specialized observation, but she was no longer at that hospital either.
“What do you mean arranged? By who?”
“Mrs. Carter authorized the transfer.”
“To where?”
“I can’t disclose that.”
Mark immediately protested that he was their father. Dr. Patel calmly reminded him that I was their mother and had been the parent who remained present, signed the consent forms, made the necessary medical decisions, and coordinated their follow-up care when no other approved contact was available.
“I’m their father.”
“And Mrs. Carter is their mother. She is the parent who remained present, signed the consent forms, made medical decisions, and coordinated follow-up care when no other approved contact was available.”
Mark abruptly stood, sending the chair scraping backward. The situation he had expected to fix with an apology was rapidly becoming something he could no longer control.
“She can’t just take my children and disappear.”
“She didn’t disappear. She left the hospital with a discharge plan, medical supervision, and documentation. If you have legal questions, you’ll need to speak with an attorney.”
The mention of an attorney made the situation suddenly feel permanent. Mark left the consultation room and spent the next several minutes in the parking garage calling me repeatedly, but after eleven unanswered attempts, he finally called his mother.
“Mark?”
“Mom. Have you heard from Emily?”
There was a pause before Diane answered, and her first concern wasn’t my location. She wanted to know where her son had been while his wife was undergoing emergency surgery.
“Where have you been?”
“I asked if you’ve heard from Emily.”
“Don’t speak to me like that.”
Mark closed his eyes and forced himself to lower his voice.
“Please. Just tell me.”
