Then she saw me.
And immediately knew.
Her eyes moved toward Daniel.
“You told her.”
“He told me.”
Grace closed her eyes.
“Oh boy.”
I walked toward the bed.
“You let me sit at Sunday dinner with Mom and Dad for FOUR YEARS knowing they tried to send you away?”
Grace whispered, “You’re loud.”
“You almost died. I’m allowed to be loud.”
She held out her hand.
I took it.
“You would have fought them,” she said.
“You bet I would.”
“You would have stopped speaking to Mom.”
“Currently happening.”
“And Dad.”
“Also happening.”
Grace sighed.
“That is why.”
I stared at her.
“You protected them.”
“No.”
Her fingers squeezed mine weakly.
