My husband m0cked me at a pool party, saying I WASN’T as attractive as his brother’s new wife — so I put him in his place. After our second child was born, I quickly went back to work because my husband, Carl, had been laid off during company downsizing. I was overwhelmed by work, exhaustion, caring for a baby and our three-year-old son, and the constant chaos of having two young children. There was always cleaning or cooking to do. With that crazy schedule, I stopped taking care of myself. I forgot what going to the gym was like. I forgot what it was like to wear makeup, heels, or dresses. There simply wasn’t time for any of it. I was sure Carl would support me, just as I had supported him through this difficult period. But instead, he started making comments like: “”You’ve gained A LOT OF WEIGHT lately. Maybe it’s time for you to go to the gym?”” Or: “”Have you seen Alice? SHE’S THE DEFINITION OF BEAUTY. She dances beautifully, has an athletic body, and wears short skirts. And you?”” Alice was his brother’s new wife. Carl and his brother often talked about how perfect Alice was. She was athletic and took heels dance classes. Still, I tried to keep the peace in the family and calmly explained to Carl that, right now, I was simply trying to SURVIVE with a schedule like mine. And I held on to the hope that he understood me. But no. Yesterday, he threw a pool party at our house for his 40th birthday. The house was full of guests, and everyone was swimming. I changed into my swimsuit and walked over to the pool. Suddenly, Carl and his brother started LAUGHING. When I asked what was going on, Carl said: “”Sorry, I couldn’t help laughing. Alice was just swimming, and she CLEARLY looks MORE ATTRACTIVE in a swimsuit than you do.”” It hurt to hear that. But I just thought, I’VE HAD ENOUGH. It was time for Carl to learn his lesson. So I grabbed the microphone and said: “”Everyone, I’d like to make a toast and wish my husband a happy birthday. So listen CAREFULLY…”” When I finished speaking, I WATCHED CARL TURN AS RED AS A TOMATO.

For the first time all day, I managed to eat an actual deviled egg while standing in peace.

Around two, I finally slipped upstairs, pulled out the only swimsuit that still fit, and stood staring at myself in the mirror.

I reminded myself I’d grown two children.

That was enough.

Head held high, I walked back outside toward the pool.

The moment I stepped onto the patio…

everything changed.

Everyone who could swim was already in the pool.

Steve stood in the shallow end beside Carl, holding a beer he hadn’t even started. Alice relaxed on a lounger with Onica asleep against her chest.

I walked a little closer.

Then Carl burst into loud laughter.

Steve laughed too—until he caught sight of my face. His smile vanished, and he suddenly looked like he wanted to disappear.

I stopped where I was.

“What’s so funny?” I asked.

Carl wiped tears from his eyes.

“Sorry, sorry, I couldn’t help it! Alice was just swimming, and, I mean, come on. She clearly looks more attractive in a swimsuit than you do.”

The entire patio fell silent.

Someone’s fork clinked against a plate.

Alice’s expression hardened instantly.

The words hurt, but I said nothing.

Instead, one thought settled quietly in my mind.

I’d had enough.

“I couldn’t help it!”

I turned around, walked back inside, climbed the stairs, and quietly closed the bedroom door.

I sat on the edge of the bed with both hands covering my mouth.

A gentle knock followed almost immediately.
