His constant comparisons.
It had never really been about my body.
He had been creating a story.
A convenient story where he could leave, blame my postpartum body, and make me the villain for being exhausted.
I looked up.
“You told Steve?”
“Yes. He’s with us on this.”
A humorless laugh escaped me.
“My husband compared a 35-year-old woman to you at his own birthday party!”
Alice said nothing.
I wiped my face, stood up, and faced the mirror.
“Can I borrow your phone for one more minute?”
“Sure,” Alice answered.
I walked back downstairs.
The guests still lingered around the pool, pretending nothing had happened.
I picked up the microphone.
After tapping it twice, the conversations faded away.
“Everyone, I’d like to make a toast and wish my husband a happy birthday. So listen carefully.”
Glasses lifted.
Carl smiled, convinced praise was coming.
“For months now, my husband has been generous enough to tell me I’ve gained weight. That I should look more like Alice. That Alice, and I quote, is ‘the definition of beauty.’”
Uneasy laughter rippled through the crowd.
“And tonight, at his own party, he shared that Alice clearly looks more attractive in a swimsuit than I do. So I finally understand why he’s been so focused on her.”
Holding up Alice’s phone, I read two brief messages.
