My wife took our son and daughter on a trip, and they never came back — 40 years later, I found a box hidden inside my daughter’s mattress that made my bl00d run cold. My wife, Clara, took our daughter and our son on a short trip to visit her sister, who lived by the ocean. I was overwhelmed with work at the time, so they went without me. But then Clara’s sister, Gwen, called me and said they’d never made it to her house. When the police started searching for them, all they found was their empty car on a bridge over a river. The search went on for years. Divers searched the river over and over again. The police had countless theories, but the most likely one was that the car had skidded off the bridge, and they’d been thrown into the water by the impact and swept away by the current. Two years later, the police officially declared them D:EAD. After that, I was simply existing. Every day, I’d come home from work to an empty house. I never touched my son’s or daughter’s rooms. It was as if I believed that one day they’d come back. Forty years have passed, and my heart still aches. Then, one day, my doctor told me that, because of my health, I could no longer live alone and needed someone to take care of me. So my nephew said we’d sell the house and that I’d come live with his family. That meant I had no choice but to finally pack up my wife’s, my daughter’s, and my son’s belongings. As I was sorting through my daughter’s room, I became so tired that I dropped onto her bed and heard a CRACKING sound. I pressed my hand against the mattress and felt something SOLID. I turned the mattress over and found a roughly stitched slit. I grabbed a pair of scissors, cut it open, and pulled out a BOX that had been hidden inside the mattress. I opened the box. Inside was a handwritten NOTE. It was in Clara’s handwriting. My breath caught the moment I read the first line: “Andrew, if you’re reading this, then something has happened to me. Please read this to the end CAREFULLY. Don’t trust Gwen. There’s SOMETHING you never knew.” Read the rest of this story in 1st comment⬇️

“Why not?”

“Because I already had one.”

PART 3
Near the end of her life, Clara came across a newspaper clipping about the memorial I held at the bridge every year.

When she realized I had never stopped searching, she recorded a message asking Gwen to help the children find me.

Aria later discovered the tape hidden among Clara’s belongings in a box Gwen had packed.

“Play it,” I said. “Peace built on a lie isn’t peace.”

Clara’s weakened voice filled the room.

“Aria. Shaun. Your father loved you. Gwen believed she was protecting me, but fear isn’t truth. I should’ve asked your father for the truth.”

Aria covered her mouth.

“Gwen said you caused Mom’s stroke,” Shaun said from the doorway. “She said Mom collapsed because you chose another woman.”

My grip tightened around my cane.

“And after Mom struggled for years, Gwen said she’d lost the will to recover because of you,” Aria added. “We blamed you when she died.”

I looked at both of them.

“You were children living inside the only story an adult allowed you to hear.”

Then I called Gwen.

“I found Clara’s note.”

“What do you want, Andrew?”

“You’ve spoken for my wife long enough. Tomorrow, you listen.”

The family gathered the following evening.

Gwen stood at the head of the table.

“I did what Clara needed.”

“No,” I said. “You did what kept Clara dependent on you.”

“I protected her from you.”

“You photographed me, assumed the worst, then hid behind the car accident.”

I turned to Aria and Shaun.

“I failed your mother too. She asked me what I was hiding, and I gave her silence. I thought being faithful was enough.”

Gwen raised her chin.

“Exactly.”

I faced her again.

“That was my failure. The next 40 years were your choice.”

Aria placed Sarah’s records on the table.

“Did Dad ever say he was leaving us?” she asked.

“No.”

“Did you learn that he was searching?”

Gwen lowered her eyes.

“Eventually.”

Shaun rested his arm on the table, the old watch visible on his wrist.

“You let us hate him.”

“I thought the truth would destroy you.”

“You’d already taught us who to blame,” he said.

I played Clara’s recording.
